The Aubreyad Press Gang Epic Adventure Week Three

1. During the first part of this chapter, Jack and Stephen argue when the Sophie encounters a ship that has the plague aboard. As a medical man, Stephen wishes to help those afflicted, but Jack forbids it because of the effect it might have upon the Sophie. How are Jack’s and Stephen’s respective callings alike, and how are they different? Are the requirements of each more likely to be in harmony or discord? What do their callings say about these two characters, and about their relationship?

2. In this chapter, the Sophie takes her first prize. What effect does this success have on Jack, and on his crew?

3. What was James Dillon’s involvement with the United Irishmen? Stephen Maturin’s? What effect did the rebellion’s failure have on each, and how has that impacted their lives and behavior?

4. What do you think is the real reason James Dillon doesn’t like Jack Aubrey? How might this effect the Sophie throughout the novel?
